9 Questions to Ask Before Hiring an IT Service Provider

Before you commit to another Managed IT Services contract, make sure you’re asking the right questions—because the wrong provider could cost you far more than you think.

Here are the nine essential questions every business should ask before signing on the dotted line:

1. What’s included—and what’s not?
Many IT contracts hide key services behind vague language or “optional” fees. Get a clear, itemized list of services covered.

2. How flexible is the contract?
Can you scale up or down without penalties? Can you leave if the partnership isn’t working?

3. How do you handle after-hours emergencies?
Technology doesn’t keep business hours. Make sure after-hours and weekend support is included.

4. Are you hardware/software agnostic?
If your IT provider makes money from selling equipment or licenses, their advice may not be in your best interest.

5. What’s your average response and resolution time?
Get real metrics, not vague promises.

6. Who owns my data and system documentation?
You should retain ownership and access at all times.

7. What’s your process for onboarding and offboarding?
A smooth transition is crucial. Make sure they can explain how they’ll integrate with your team—and how they’ll exit if needed.

8. Do you provide strategic guidance or just technical support?
A good MSP offers more than help desk services. They should act as a trusted advisor.

9. How do you measure success?
Make sure their success metrics align with your business goals—not just ticket resolution speed.
